PLATO MEETS BILL HALEY AND THE COMETS
PLATO MEETS BILL HALEY AND THE COMETS
The 1955 movie Blackboard Jungle featured Glenn Ford as a teacher facing a classroom full of unruly youths. The movie revived the 1954 rock and roll hit ‘Rock Around the Clock’ by Bill Haley making it the movie’s theme song.
Riots in Seaside, Oregon and the Berkley protests flowed from disaffected youth. And Vietnam.
Socrates through Plato asks why does paradise never come? It is because people become acquisitive, desiring what others have. Soon they encroach on the territory of others. All cities become divided between the rich and the poor. Merchants “spend large sums of money on their wives”. Wealthy traders and bankers rule the state. Statesmanship is replaced by politics where leaders seek the spoils of office. Soon follows revolution as a result of grave and accumulated wrongs.
